Pole Barns Sapulpa

Sitting in the midst of Creek County and Tulsa County is Sapulpa, Oklahoma. With a population of just over 20,500 in 2010, up from 19,00 in 2000 census, this is Creek County county seat. It was named after a Lower Creek Indian from Oscocheetown Alabama, the Kasihta Tribe.
Sapulpa would establish a trading post in 1850 in what would be approximately 1 mile from present day downtown Sapulpa. The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad would build a spur here in 1886, naming it Sapulpa Station. In July of 1889 a charter was established for the Sapulpa post office.
Continued Controversy
In 1907 Oklahoma joined the Union and became a state. Every county in this new state then held an election to select the county seat location. For Creek County, it was between Bristow and Sapulpa, and it would be 5 years of contesting before it was determined as Sapulpa as the winner by a decision of the state Supreme Court.
But this wouldn’t be the only controversy this city would know. In 2008, the Sapulpa Daily Herald would gain the attention of the national media when it did not report Obama’s presidential election. Instead it announced Creek County’s winner was John McCain. The publication would be accused of racism but the paper still will state that it covers only the events and news locally. However, history of the publication shows that it covered every presidential election prior to 2008.
