Pole Barn Houses: DIY or Hire a Contractor?
Before you can have a clear understanding of pole barn houses, you should learn what pole barns are and the purpose they serve. Farmers need an affordable way to store their farm equipment, and since a pole barn doesn’t take much material or time, they are the perfect answer for them.
With pole barn houses, there isn’t a foundation like there is with traditionally constructed houses. They are built by burying poles deep into the ground. Instead of wood framing going up with wood panels and sheetrock attached to create walls, there are either aluminum or steel panels affixed to them for the walls, creating pole barn houses.
Pole barn houses are built quicker than the traditional construction way of building houses. But with pole barn houses, you are getting only the shell whereas, with a traditional style house, you have walls to create rooms.
Consider this is what makes pole barn houses so unique! You can design the interior any way you want, including to look just like a traditionally built home. Going with residential pole barn houses doesn’t mean you must live in a warehouse-like environment with metal walls. In fact, residential pole barn houses are indistinguishable from the other houses when they are constructed properly.
Where do you find pole barn houses? Well, there are kits available on-line and from big box stores. The kits include the plans and the materials. However, pricing can be an issue for many people because not ALL of the materials are included.
Or, you can hire a contractor that builds pole barn houses, choosing one with experience and references. They will most likely have the connections to buy the materials needed cheaper than the kit will cost you.
Either way you choose to go, remember that the electric and plumbing are not included in the cost. If you are going to build it yourself, you’ll need to hire out a licensed professional to install these. If you hire a contractor to build your pole barn house, they will either be licensed for electric and plumbing, or they’ll have an outside contractor they work with do it.
